SCHOLARSHIP 2009/2010 AT DEPARTMENT OF FOREIGN LANGUAGES & LITERATURES COLLEGE OF LIBERAL ARTS UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA DULUTH
Alayne and Charles Berkins Scholarship
ANNOUNCEMENT FOR 2009-2010
The Alayne and Charles Berkins Scholarship serves undergraduate Liberal Arts majors in the Spanish, German Studies and French programs in the Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures at UMD.
This scholarship is to be used for tuition, books, fees and/or other related educational expenses while attending UMD. This scholarship will be awarded to students for use in their junior or senior year, and it will be based on a) scholastic merit and b) need. Students may receive this award up to two times.
Students will need a 3.0 GPA in their language program courses and a 2.75 GPA overall, at the time of application and during the time of their scholarship. Students will apply in Spring semester during their sophomore or junior year, for a scholarship which can be used the following year, during their junior or senior year. By the announced deadline, students will write a short essay, in the target language, in which they explain a) their foreign language studies to date, b) their foreign language studies in the upcoming year, and c) their future plans for after graduation. Students also will attach a) an unofficial copy of their transcript, and b) information detailing their economic situation, in which either 1) they show a copy of their completed FAFSA and a list of scholarships they are receiving, or 2) they detail how the scholarship will help them financially.
This scholarship will be a minimum of $500 per student per year. Awards will be contingent upon the required gpa’s being maintained after Spring grades have been posted.
Deadline for application: Monday, February 2, 2009, in H 457.
