International Graduate Program in Social Science - Germany

The Berlin Graduate School of Social Sciences (BGSS) is an international program designed to promote doctoral research in the social sciences at Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin. The BGSS is a part of a regional network shared by leading research institutions such as the Social Science Research Center Berlin (WZB), the Centre Marc Bloch (CMB) and the German Institute for Economic Research (DIW).

Doctoral training at the BGSS is interdisciplinary with a strong sociology and political science focus. The research agenda of the BGSS is centered on the comparative analysis of:
o varieties of social inclusion (problems of class structure and social inequality as well as problems of cultural heterogeneity, identity politics and social conflict).
o varieties of democracy (structure, actors and performance of mature and young democracies, transition to democracy and autocracy, hybrid regimes, problems of welfare states and capitalism, European integration).

We offer positions as doctoral researchers covering three years beginning in October 2009. Members of the doctoral program who are not funded by other institutions will be awarded scholarships of 1200€/month for up to three years, contingent on the successful
completion of each year. In addition, we offer a professional work environment and support for research stays abroad.
We offer positions as pre-doctoral candidates in the introductory year. These individuals can receive funding in the amount of 650€/month.

The application deadline is March 31st. For further information please visit our website at www.bgss.hu-berlin.de

The BGSS is a Graduate School of the Excellence Initiative funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG).
